SC gives final deadline to govt
ISLAMABAD – A three-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice Javed Iqbal, on Tuesday directed the Federation to submit a comprehensive report about those people who were killed in Lal Masjid operation.
“The apex court wanted to trace the people who had been missing since years, besides the details of those persons who lost their lives in Operation Silence,” Justice Javed said and added, “The correct figure will assist us to trace the missing persons on urgent basis.”
Justice Javed was hearing miscellaneous pleas in missing persons case. He directed Secretaries of Interior, Foreign and Defence to appear before the court on 18th March, next date of hearing. The bench also summoned Chief Secretaries and Inspector Generals of Police of all the provinces on the same day with detailed reports about missing persons.
During the course of proceedings, Foreign Office Legal Advisor, Sher Bahadur Khan, presented a report before the apex court about those Pakistanis who were languishing in foreign jails.
“A total of 6,337 Pakistanis are languishing in foreign jails. Out of these, 5,136 Pakistanis are convicted while the remaining 1201 are under-trial prisoners,” the report said. Majority of them have not excess to judicial assistance as well as no diplomatic effort is being made accordingly, the report concluded.
Report was prepared on the directions of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to trace out whether the missing persons’ names are included in the list of convicted Pakistanis. The report is also available with TheNation.
Some 1,228 Pakistanis are languishing in UAE prisons, 1,152 in Saudi Arabia, 712 in India, 285 in Indonesia, 354 in Kuwait, 108 in Russia, 210 in USA, 266 in Italy, 76 in Oman, 108 in Germany and 457 in UK and 100 Pakistanis are being imprisoned in Thailand, the report further explained.
